General Update and Heat!

I thought I'd take a moment to say that practice is going well.  I believe that the players are excited about playing soon and are looking forward to a good year.  It won't be long before they fall into a routine at school and we get into a routine for in-season practice and play.  The biggest issues we have faced so far have been some small injuries, having a small team, and the heat.

We've really been blessed that the injuries we've had so far have not been season ending.  Continue to pray for protection over our players.

Having a small team makes organizing practice a nightmare.  I love the guys that we have committed to our program and they have responded to what we are trying to do and are giving it what they have.  I'm proud of that.  It's been an adjustment to practice with a small number, but I'll go to battle any day with these guys!

The heat has probably been the biggest issue that we have had to face.  Please keep in mind that we are following the guidelines set by the state regarding heat.  We did have some issues earlier on, but it was brought to our attention and we have corrected the issue.  We have committed ourselves to following the rules as closely as possible for two reasons.  First of all, we want to set a good example to our kids.  We can't hold them to high standards unless we hold ourselves to high standards as well.  Secondly, but most importantly, we value our kids.  We want to make sure they are safe in all regards.  We check the temperature and humidity ON SITE with an accurate device specifically made for this purpose.  From those readings we determine the heat index and follow the rules set forth by the state accordingly based on the heat index range.  If the heat index is over 104 by our readings, we will continue practice in an air-conditioned facility.  We have had to move practice twice so far.  We will continue to keep tabs on the heat situation.  Please trust that we do have the safety and welfare of the kids constantly in mind.  We also ask that players have tennis shoes at the ready just in case the heat index reaches the point that we have to carry practice inside.
